My story & practices
I am Lisa Freyer Duesberry, and I founded Heritage Gardening LLC in 2023. I garden on a half-acre suburban lot in plant hardiness zone 7b in Hanover County, Virginia in the United States of America. I manage a 1,500 square-foot fruit, vegetable and flower garden year-round to supply my family with fresh and canned produce free from preservatives and additives. I focus on growing varieties that perform well in zone 7, seed-saving, preserving what I grow, inviting and protecting pollinators, and effective gardening methods tested by my hands in my garden. I trained as a permaculturist, and learned effective growing techniques for the past 3-plus decades from family and friends, some of whom are professional farmers, ranchers, scientists and gardeners.
My garden is successful because I am tenacious and adaptive. I test new gardening methods, products and varieties as part of my everyday gardening tasks, and implement the successes. Your garden will be successful, too, because it will be built upon the experience of gardeners ahead of you. In every food garden, I aim to include the following effective elements:
consistent human effort from you and your household members
clean, walkable, maintainable pathways and edges
a compost heap
the right tools, and an appropriate place to store them
easy access to water
natural mulch - hay, wood chips, grass clippings or tree trimmings
the right plants for the growing conditions and sun patterns the land provides
flowers to improve pollinator visits
My mission
Heritage Gardening LLC helps landowners successfully grow fruits and vegetables.
My vision
Heritage Gardening LLC inspires humans to establish household food security by growing their own food via evidence-based practices that respect nature.
